How We Approach Battery Efficiency

A technical overview of the design decisions behind Bike IQ's power management.

How Bike IQ Saves Battery

  • OLED-optimized display We take full advantage of OLED screens with complete control over refresh rates—updating only when needed, not constantly.
  • Smart partial updates Only the sections that change get refreshed. No wasteful full-screen redraws every second.
  • True dark mode Dark mode isn't just aesthetic—it means fewer lit pixels and real power savings on OLED displays.
  • Dynamic pixel dimming We dim unnecessary pixels on the fly during your ride. It's imperceptible to you, but it adds up over hours of riding.
  • Optimized processing Every line of code is written with efficiency in mind. Data structures are chosen with reduced power consumption as the top priority. No wasted calculations.
  • Minimal network calls Weather updates and other network requests only happen when they make sense—not on a constant loop draining your battery and data.
  • Built on Apple's best practices The iPhone already does a phenomenal job with battery optimization. We implement Apple's best practices and let iOS do what it does best. That's why we love the iPhone.

Tips for Maximum Battery Life

  • Treat it as a bike computer Close other apps and avoid running too many things in the background. Let Bike IQ have the resources it needs.
  • Don't start a ride at 20% Give yourself headroom. Starting low means stressing about battery instead of enjoying the ride.
  • Use Low Power Mode if needed iOS Low Power Mode can extend your ride when battery is getting tight.
  • Start long rides at 100% Some iPhones have "Optimized Battery Charging" that caps at 80-90%. Turn it off before epic rides to get every bit of juice.
  • Your iPhone is a power bank too Did your electric pump die? You can use your iPhone to recharge small accessories. Just be mindful of your remaining battery.
  • A small power bank goes a long way A lightweight power bank in your jersey pocket can extend your rides well beyond 10 hours.
